Last week, every first grader at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary school in Syracuse took home eight new books of their own for summer break – thanks to Syracuse basketball fans.
The school is located in the shadow of the Carrier Dome. Most of the students come from low-income families. Providing students with books of their choice for summer reading has been shown to improve increase performance on reading tests by 35-40%.
Check out the photo page to see the kids with their books, as well as the thank you notes that they wrote to the Syracuse fans that supported the project. Lots of smiles!
